Vandeventer + Carlander Architects approach to design is founded in appropriateness, and as such we do not promote an identifiable style in our work. Our design principles stem from our own architectural beliefs. We believe that a project must be sensitive and appropriate to its site and context. We believe that a project is capable of excellence regardless of budget. We believe each project should be a design which reflects our client's goals and dreams, fully synthesizing design integrity with the realities of program and budget. We believe our work should tend towards quiet elegance over visual noise. We believe that architectural detail and quality construction are critical in that the buildings we create are likely to be around long after we are gone. We believe what we do is important.

A common view amongst architects is that good clients are fewer than good architects; we concur with this observation. For us, a good client is one that is willing to work with and share in the exploration of ideas, one who allows a project to develop to its full potential, one who is willing to push forward with an idea to test its validity. Allocating space and maintaining the appropriate adjacencies of functions is an easy undertaking, but striving to realize ideas that promote and evoke special qualities and emotions is a more difficult task. It is through this effort that we attempt to stamp the individuality of our clients on their projects.

We are very serious about the quality of our work. We are committed to providing our clients with professional guidance, architectural service based on design elegance and technical expertise, and exceptional, dedicated service.

We believe that our homes and neighborhoods should be healthy, vibrant places that uplift the spirit and gracefully fit our needs. We call for an end to poor construction, bad design, misleading marketing, unfair lending practices and environmental neglect in the housing industry. We acknowledge our collective responsibility to create CLOSE, SIMPLE, LIGHT places to live that leave a positive legacy for future generations.

provides design focused information that homeowners can use to improve the quality of how and where they live. It takes its name from the slow food movement which arose as a reaction to the processed food industry. The sprawl of cookie cutter housing that surrounds us is like fast food - standardized, homogenous, and wasteful. It contributes to a too fast life that is bad for us, our cities, and the environment. In the same way that slow food raises awareness of the food we eat and how these choices affect our lives, Slow Home empowers you to take more control of your home and improve the quality of how you live while reducing your environmental impact and futureproofing the long term investment value of your home.
